Now a Ryder Cup winner and one of the world’s most consistent players, Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen is making waves in the golfing world after some stellar performances in 2018.
Olesen claimed his 12th title as a professional at the 2018 Italian Open in June, after rounds of 65, 68, 65 and a final round of 64, to finish on a 22 under par total.
Victory in Italy as well as a tied 2nd finish at the BMW International Open, tied 3rd at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and tied 6th at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, granted Olesen an automatic qualifying spot on the 2018 European Ryder Cup Team.
Olesen helped Team Europe to victory in his maiden Ryder Cup, claiming one point from his two matches, by beating Jordan Spieth in his Sunday singles match, 5&4.
Having raced into a lead of five up after a brilliant birdie on the 9th, Thorbjørn birdied again on the 16th hole to complete one of the most one-sided singles matches of the day.
Other notable performances from Thorbjørn last season were 4th at the Nordea Masters, tied 7th at the WGC-HSBC Champions and 10th at the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 in Perth.
During his career, Thorbjørn has claimed individual victories at the 2016 Turkish Airlines, the 2015 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the 2014 ISPS HANDA Perth International, the 2012 Sicilian Open and in 2010 at The Princess Open.
As well as the 2018 Ryder Cup, team successes for Thorbjørn have come at the 2017 GolfSixes event (Team Denmark), the 2016 ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf (Team Denmark), the 2013 Royal Trophy (Team Europe) and the 2013 Seve Trophy (Team Continental Europe). He also represented Denmark in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Thorbjørn is a big football fan, following his hometown team of FC Copenhagen as well as Manchester United. He also has a keen interest in music, movies, theatre and skiing.
Thorbjorn is a fitness fanatic and would love to run a marathon.
