It was DP World Tour victory number eight for Thorbjørn Olesen, having won the Ras Al Khaimah Championship by 6 shots yesterday at Al Hamra Golf Club.
Starting the final day four shots ahead of fellow Dane, Rasmus Højgaard, both Thorbjørn and Rasmus birdied the first hole, before Thorbjørn made an uncharacteristic double bogey at the second, reducing his lead.
Through seven holes, both Olesen and Højgaard were tied for the lead, before Thorbjørn made a stunning eagle and quickly there was a three shot swing.
Getting his drive away on the 72nd hole of the tournament, it gave Olesen a comfortable walk up the 18th fairway and he made birdie to finish the tournament on 27 under par and cruise to a 6 shot victory.
“It’s very special,” said Thorbjørn, whose family were present to see his win. “Standing here with Cooper makes it a little more special. It was still a battle out there, it got close and you’ve got one of the most talented players right behind you so I knew it was going to be tough and we were tied for the lead very quickly.”
“To win was a goal and it was nice to get that here, especially being here at my new home. It’s always a place I like to come to, not just for golf but for holidays. It’s a great place and I’m really happy that I could get a win here.”
Throughout the week, Thorbjørn shot a blistering round of 62 on Friday, which equalled the course record and the total of 261 was the lowest winning score so far this season on the DP World Tour.
Thorbjørn has now won in his last three consecutive seasons and seven times out of eight when holding the 54 hole lead.
With this win, Thorbjørn is now ranked 57th in the Official World Golf Rankings and 6th on the Race to Dubai rankings.
Well done, Thorbjørn, we are so proud of you and can’t wait to see what 2024 holds. Special mention also to Rasmus who finished solo 2nd.
