SCHEFFLER’S ON TOP OF THE WORLD

Monday, March 28, 2022

Scottie Scheffler became the new world number one after defeating Kevin Kisner to claim the WGC-DELL Technologies Match Play title.

Runner-up at last year’s event, Scheffler had to beat former champions in both his semi-final and final, but he established early leads in both and refused to relinquish control.

He went the final 57 holes at Austin Country Club without trailing and was so impressive in the championship match, that Kisner didn’t win a hole.

In securing his third PGA Tour title in just six weeks, the 25 year old rose from fifth to first in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Scottie took an early lead in his semi-final match against Dustin Johnson, but DJ fought back and forced Scheffler to hit a superb approach shot to within 12 feet on the 16th, where he held the birdie putt and went on to close out on the 17th for another birdie and a 3&1 victory.

This set up a Sunday afternoon showdown with past champion, Kevin Kisner.

Sinking a 20 foot putt on the 4th green, Scottie went two up after four holes in the final. He extended his lead and closed the door an on attempted comeback, by chipping in for birdie from a greenside bunker to tie the 12th hole.

Holing a 16 foot birdie putt on the 14th saw Scottie move to 4 up with 4 to play and he made no mistake in closing out, halving the 15th with a par and sealing his maiden WGC title with a 4&3 victory.

“I don’t feel like No. 1 in the world. I feel like the same guy I was four months ago, and I hope that doesn’t change, “I never got this far in my dreams,” said Scheffler. ”I always dreamed of playing in this tournament, and just to be out here was a treat, and to be able to play seven rounds and finish and win is really special.

Scheffler won his first PGA Tour title at the WM Phoenix Open six weeks ago and followed up that win with victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard.

With this, Scottie is the youngest ever winner of the event and it earned him 550 FedExCup points, to keep him atop the standings.

Scottie, we have no words for the last 6 weeks other than, we all knew you were destined for stardom! Hook em!
