SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER WINS IN SCOTTSDALE

Monday, February 14, 2022

Scottie Scheffler clinched his first PGA Tour title at the WM Phoenix Open, when he beat FedEx Cup champion and Ryder Cup team-mate, Patrick Cantlay, with a birdie at the third hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Having been nine strokes back entering the weekend at one of the PGA Tour’s most famous tournaments, Scottie shot a Saturday 62 to pull within two shots of the leader, Sahith Theegala.

He secured a final group Sunday tee-time and played the first 12 holes in even par, with four birdies and four bogeys, before making a late charge.

Having made birdies on the 13th, 14th, 15th and 17th holes he jumped up the leaderboard to -16 and needed a birdie down the last for victory.

Leaving himself a five-foot putt on the 72nd hole to take the title, it brushed the edge of the cup and he and Cantlay headed for the playoff.

Scheffler and Cantlay matched pars on the first two extra trips down the 18th, with both players hitting the fairway and green the first time and both scrambling for par on the second.

Scottie made no mistake on their third trip down the 437-yard 18th hole, firing a 115-yard wedge shot to 26 feet and rolling in the putt for birdie. With Cantlay missing his 11 foot birdie putt, the title was Scheffler’s and he could celebrate sealing his breakthrough win.

“This is a lot of hard work,” Scheffler said after being embraced by his wife Meredith at TPC Scottsdale’s 18th.

“We worked really hard for this and I am so appreciative. It’s such a great place and such a fun week. I am very pleased.”

This win brings Scottie up to 4th on the FedEx Cup rankings and 9th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Congratulations, Scottie – all at Hambric Sports are incredibly proud of you and know that this will be the first PGA Tour victory of many!
